Pierre Batcheff, a French actor originally named Piotr Bacev from Russia, was born in Harbin, Manchuria. His most renowned film was Un chien andalou (1929), directed by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali. Batcheff was married to French film editor Denise Piazza.
Tragically, both Batcheff and the leading actress in Un chien andalou, Simone Mareuil, met with suicide. Mareuil tragically set herself on fire in 1954, while Batcheff’s cause of death was reportedly an overdose of Veronal.
